Slot Machines or Table Games - Which Rules?
Nov 9th 2012, 17:49

When I was a kid, I just loved slot machines. I bought tiny 50-cent machines and I also sent away to Spencer Gifts for more than one Jackpot Bank that "really pays off." It's true, the machine paid-out when you got a jackpot. Awesome! I was happy for a year until I had a chance to actually play a real slot machine, an old Superior Slot in my Aunt's basement. Then I was hooked, and ruined for all other toy machines.

Somehow that love affair for real (and reel) slot machines turned a bit crazy after my family stayed a night in Battle Mountain, Nevada (think desert, cactus, and nothing else for 100 miles!). I gave my dad 45-cents and he and my mother went to the only place in town, the Owl Club, and played the nickle slots. When they came back my father said he hit a jackpot on my 45-cents and gave me a huge cup full of nickles. Whether he really hit a jackpot with my nickles or not, the cup-o-nickles made me love slots even more, and eventually I found myself out of school, out of poker cash, and working as a slot-tech in Reno. Go figure!

For 15-years I though slots ruled, and they did in my world. But then I started playing poker and blackjack for real money - and (again, go figure) winning. So now it's a toss-up for me. I love'em both, but the table games are a source of income. Not all of them, of course. I've taken a serious hit when it comes to some games like Carribean Stud and Let-it-Ride. Then again, if you ever learn how to play Chemin-de-Fer, you could find yourself hooked.

At Chemin-de-Fer, you actually get to make some choices about taking a card, unlike baccarat, and the table is too cool. And, you play against the other players, not the house, so if you are particularly competitive, as most poker players are, well, you'll get your chance to go "all-in" by being the banker or calling "banco" to cover another player's pot of chips. That's just too fun!

So, in my final analysis, hmmm, nope, can't decide definitively about slots or table games, because, you know, there's always video poker too. And how about you; got a favorite?

BJ Dealer Busts

When you play Blackjack you have some incomplete information to base your playing decisions on. You know the value of your two cards and you know the value of the dealer’s up card. You don’t know what the dealer’s hole card is and you don’t know what the next card out of the shoe will be. However if you use basic strategy when you play you can make an accurate decision based on just the information that you do know.

Blackjack basic strategy is based on the mathematics of the game. It has been tested and refined through computer simulations. When it is followed correctly it reduces the house edge to the minimum, which is usually about one-half of a percent. When you use basic strategy, you make your decision to Hit, stand or double down based on your two cards and the dealers up card. Many players wonder what percentage of time will the dealer bust based on their up card. (Whenever your hand or the dealer’s hand goes over the total of 21 it is called a bust.)

The dealer will bust more often with certain up cards than with others. Take a look at the chart below. You will see that the worst cards for the dealer are the 5 and 6 followed closely by the 4. When the dealer is showing a 5 or a 6 they have a 42 percent chance of busting and a 40 percent chance when they have a 4 showing. This is why you double down more often when the dealer is showing a 4, 5 or 6.

The cards where the dealer is least likely to bust are the Ace, 10 and 9. When the dealer has one of these cards showing, they also have another advantage since the player has to act first. According to basic strategy, a player with a hand of less than 17 will need to take a hit when the dealer is showing a 7 - 8 - 9 - 10 or ace. If the player busts, he loses the hand even if the dealer also busts so the percentage of times the house will win is greater than just the bust percentage shown in the chart.

Play Correctly
You will make more money when the dealer is showing a card that will allow you to double down, however you must follow the rules of basic strategy. Many novice players will double down with a hand of 7 or 8 against a dealer showing an up card of 5 or 6. This is not correct and even though the dealer will bust 42 percent of the time, you will lose more money if you don’t play according to basic strategy.

Knowing the dealer’s bust percentage is useful information but it should just be used to confirm the decisions you make when you play basic strategy. If you are unsure of the correct plays you should memorize the basic strategy chart or bring one to the table with you. This way you will be playing Blackjack with the lowest house edge possible.

Blackjack Dealer Bust Percentages

One of the reasons for the popularity of Video Poker is the fact that some of the games return over 100 percent and other “full pay” games offer close to 100 percent over the long run when you play the correct video poker strategy. Unfortunately a few mistakes when playing can wipe out the little advantage that you have. It is very important that you lean the strategy for each game and play them correctly. Each video poker game has its own strategy. For example you can not use the strategy for Jacks or Better when playing Deuces Wild.

Learning a new game or playing correctly at the casino is really quite easy when you use a video poker strategy card. A strategy card will show you the correct way to play each hand that you are dealt. By following the cards advice you will keep the hand that offers the highest possible return. To learn a new game it is best if you practice at home using video poker tutorial software along with a strategy card to show you the proper play.

Two excellent tutorial programs on the market are Video Poker for Winners and Zamzow’s BDPWinpoker software. You can generate strategy charts from the Frugal VP software or use strategy cards generated from Tomski’s VPSM Video Poker Strategy Master. The software will let you know when you made a mistake and you can check the strategy card to see the reason for your error.

When you are ready to head for the casino to play you can take your strategy card along with you. When you are dealt a hand that you are unsure of, you can look up the proper play on your strategy card.

VPSM generates a basic strategy and an advanced strategy for each game. The recreational or beginner player will find the basic strategy easier to use because it does not involve remembering a lot of penalty card situations. The advance strategy will add a few hundredths of one percent to the total return. The gain is very slight and the basic strategy should be more than adequate for most players.

Tomski has given me permission to post the basic version of the strategies for three of the most popular games generated by his VPSM program. I want thank him for his generosity in allowing me to share these with you. The games are:

Jack or Better

Deuces Wild

Double Bonus Poker

To use the charts all you have to do is look at the hand that you are dealt. Starting at the top of the chart you will look down until you come to that hand. The hand closet to the top of the chart is the correct play. VPSM color-codes the hands to make it easier to see the correct play. I have tried to duplicate the colors as closely as possible. The colors and abbreviations are as follows:
Red for Royal Flush (RF)
Blue for Straight Flush (STFL)
Pink for Flushes
Green for Pairs, Full House (FH), 4-of-a-kind (QUADS) and 3-of-a-kind (Trips)
Brown for Straight (ST)

When you see the small letter (s) that means the cards is the same suit. Example, QJs would be the Queen and Jack of the same suit.

Let’s look at an example of the Jacks or Better strategy. You are dealt the following hand: 3 of hearts, 9 of hearts, 3 of clubs, and 6 of hearts and Queen of hearts. You have a low pair but you also have a four-card flush. Looking at the chart you see that the four-card flush is closer to the top of the chart than the low pair. The four-card flush is your correct play.

Strategy cards are a valuable tool you can use to improve your game because they will help you play every hand correctly. Don’t hesitate to bring them along with you to the casino. If you find a hand that you are unsure of how to play, take a second to look at the card.

Until Next time remember:
Luck comes and goes.....Knowledge Stays Forever.

Craps Place Bets
Nov 9th 2012, 11:08

The passline bet with odds is the best craps bet you can make because it has the lowest house edge but players are not limited to just the passline bet. A player can bet on the numbers 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 at any time. There is a row of boxes on the craps layouts with the numbers with the corresponding numbers. These are where the place bets go. The numbers that you can place are sometimes referred to as “point numbers” or “box numbers. You can make a wager on any of these numbers at any time. Place bets can be great if you have a shooter who is rolling repeating numbers.

How to Make Place Bets
To make a place bet you put your chips in the center of the table and tell the dealer which numbers you want to place. The dealer will then move your chips to the number you want to bet. Place bets are not self service bets.

The dealer puts your place bet on the layout in a place that corresponds to the location of the table where you are standing. This is how the dealer knows who to pay for the winning bet when there are multiple players placing the same number.

Winning Your Bet
After you place a number it must roll before the seven in order to win. If the shooter sevens out before your number is rolled you lose. When you win a place bet the dealer will push you your winnings but the original bet stays up. You must pick these up.

Your original bet will stay on the place number until the shooter sevens out or until you ask the dealer to take your bet down. You can also take down your place bets any time you want to. If the shooter makes his point and there is a new come out roll your place bet still stays in place although in many casinos the place bets are not working on the come out roll unless you ask.

The Pay Out
The chart below shows the payoff, the true odds and the house edge for each of the pace bets.

The true odds of rolling the 6 or 8 are 6 to 5 but a winning place bet on these numbers pays $7 to $6. You must make your place bets on these numbers in multiples of six dollars. The house edge on the 6 and 8 is only 1.52 percent which makes it one of the best craps bets in the game.

The true odds of rolling a 5 or 9 are 3 to 2 but a winning place bet on these numbers pays $7 to $5. You must make your place bets in multiples of five dollars. The house edge on the 5 and 9 is 4 percent.

The true odds of rolling the 4 or 10 are 2 to 1 but a winning place bet on these numbers pays $9 to $5. You must make your place bets in multiples of five dollars. The house edge on the 4 and 10 is 6.67 percent.

Buy Bets
You can buy a number instead of placing it and receive true odds. To do this you must pay a 5 % commission to the house. Since the minimum chip value at the casino is a dollar you will be paying at least that much. It is not worth it to buy a number for less than $20.

If you are betting more than ten dollars, buying the 4 and 10 is better than placing them. This is because you are being paid 2 to 1 instead of 9 to 5. Some casinos only charge you the commission on buy bets when you win. Ask the dealer at the table if this is their policy. If you have a choice of casinos to play in, always choose the one that only charges a commission on winning bets.

Buying the 6 and 8 is not worthwhile. You will actually have higher house edge because of the commission.

Place Bets

Number Payoff True Odds House Edge
4 9-5 2-1 6.67%
5 7-5 3-2 4.0%
6 7-6 6-5 1.52%
8 7-6 6-5 1.52%
9 7-5 3-2 4.0%
10 9-5 2-1 6.67%

Hollywood has had a fascination with gamblers and gambling subjects. Over the years there have been many movies made with a gambling theme. Some of these have become classics. Here are a few of my favorites that deal with a variety gambling topics.

1. Rounders (1998)

As a poker player this is my favorite movie. I love the portrayal of the characters. Matt Damon plays a reformed poker player who just can’t give up the game. He gets into the biggest game of his life.

2. Casino (1995)

3. Oceans 11 (1960) Remade (2001)

The original with the Rat Pack is still the classic movie about a gang set to rob the casino. The remake and sequel, Oceans 12 are popular but I still like the original.

4. Vegas Vacation (1997)

This is an installment of National Lampoon’s vacation series with all the usual whacky situations of the other comedies. This is my favorite gambling comedy movie. The Griswolds head off for Las Vegas, as Clark got an extra bonus for developing a food preservative. The scene with Chevy Chase playing Blackjack against the dealer played by Shawn Wallace is priceless.

5. The Big Town (1987)

Craps players will love this movie. Matt Dillon plays a small town gambler with a gift for shooting dice, who goes to Chicago to seek his fortune.

6. Owning Mahowny

This movie shows the darker side of gambling addiction. The story is based on a true story about a bank executive who committed the largest one man fraud in Canadian history. This is not a great movie with an entertaining story line but neither is gambling addiction in true life. The fact that it was based on a true story gives it credence and makes it worth watching.

7. The Hustler (1961)

Paul Newman and Jackie Gleason star in this ultimate gambling movie about pool hustlers. Gleason plays legendary Minnesota Fats who is challenged to a high stakes match by Fast" Eddie Felson played by Newman.
