During a recent visit to the casino, I was playing blackjack when a man approached the table and sat down. He placed a five-dollar chip in the betting circle and waited for his cards. The dealer looked at him and them pointed to the green table limit sign and told him, "Sir, this is not a five dollar table."

He said, "Oh, I didn't know." He then picked up his stack of red chips and walked away. He could have saved himself from an embarrassing situation if he had read the table limit sign before sitting down to play. All table games in the casinos have a placard on the table listing the minimum bet for that game. In most cases you don't even have to read the sign. All you have to do is look at the color.

Many casinos color-code their table game signs to match the denomination of chip for the minimum bet for that table. So all you have to do is look at the color of the sign. The colors of the chips used in the majority of casinos are the same. The denominations of the colors are:

White or Blue chips are one dollar.
Red chips are five dollars and are called nickels.
Green chips are twenty-five dollars and are called quarters.
Black chips are one hundred dollars.
Purple Chips are five hundred dollars and are called Barneys.
Orange chips are one thousand dollars and are called pumpkins.

About five years ago I read a story about a casino in Las Vegas that issued one dollar chips that were black in color. This created quite a stir amongst the other casinos who have $100 chips that are black. There were concerns that scam artists would mix some of these in with the legitimate chips. The pressure was put on and the casino in question quickly recalled the one dollar black chips.

You may occasionally encounter a different color for the dollar chips but red and green are the standards in most casinos. The reason that the casino uses different color chips is to make it easy for the dealers, pit personnel and surveillance cameras to determine how much a player is betting.

By matching the color of the chips with the table signs it makes it easy to tell the minimum bet for a table with just a quick glance. A red sign would denote a five-dollar table and a green sign would tell you that the minimum bet is twenty-five dollars. This makes it convenient for the players. There are some tables that have minimums that don't correspond to chip colors such as $10 and $15 games. All you have to do is note which color sign the casino you are visiting uses. Then remember it for the next time. The casinos in Connecticut use yellow for ten-dollar tables and orange for fifteen-dollar tables.

Some casinos may have the same color sign for all table minimums. If this is the case you will need to read them before sitting down. But for most of them all you will need to do is look for the color of your choice, have a seat and place your bet.

Until next time, remember:
"Luck comes and goes...Knowledge Stays Forever!"

Roulette Split Bet

 Roulette Inside Bets

A Split Bet is a wager on two numbers and it pays 17 to 1. You make this bet by placing your chip so it straddles the line between any two numbers. Splits can be made from two adjacent numbers any where in the inside betting area providing they are adjacent. The picture above show a split on the 4 and 5.You could not make a split bet on the 6 and the 7.

Betting on Basketball is similar to betting on Football. Both of these sports use a Point spread or you can bet on the money line. Many winning Handicappers know that betting on Basketball is more profitable then betting on Football because of the sheer number of games to choose from along with a very long season. You can choose from the Professional NBA games or the hundreds of NCAA college games. Every year in March the NCAA hosts the tournament to determine the Nation’s championship team. These series of elimination tournaments are known as “March Madness.” Here is what you need to know to bet on Basketball.

How Sports Books Make Money
The casino Sports books make their money on sports bets by collecting a commission on losing bets. This is called the Vigorish or Vig for short. The most common odds are 11 to 10. This means that if you want to win $100 you are risking $110. For example you place a bet on the Giants at the casino sports book and pay $110. If the Celtics win you collect $210 when you cash your winning ticket. If you lose your bet you lose the $110.

Ideally the Sports book would like to have the same amount of money wagered on the two teams playing. If the Celtics are playing the Lakers and they have one player betting on the Celtic and one player betting on the Lakers they would pay the winner $100 but collect $110 for the loser. This gives them a $10 profit so they really don’t care who wins as long as they have an equal amount bet on each team. To accomplish this they assign a line or spread to make the contest equally attractive for both sides.

The Point Spread
Many people think that the point spread is the predicted margin of victory by which one team will beat another team but this is not true. The line is the handicapper’s prediction of what number will be required to split the wagering evenly on both teams. For this reason the line may change from the opening line to the line at game time.

When you bet on a game with the point spread your team does not necessarily have to win. You just need to cover the spread. If you be Miami is favored to win by 7 and they only win by 4 you lose. If you bet Chicago who is a 10 point under dog and they only lose by 3 points then you win.

The Money Line
A money line wager is a bet placed without the point spread. You are betting on the team to win the game outright which is also called winning “Straight UP.” When you bet a game on the money line you will have to pay odds other than the normal -110 that you would pay for a straight bet using the point spread. Obviously if you want to bet on the favorite to win straight up, you will have to risk more to win less. If you bet on the underdog, you would bet less to win more. The money line bets are based on a $100 bet. When you see a money line listed the favorite will have a figure with a minus symbol in front of it and the underdog will have a plus symbol in front of it.

For Example: The Boston Celtics are 5 point favorites over the Atlanta Hawks. The money line is listed as:
Celtics -220
Hawks +180

If you wanted to bet the Celtics on the money line you would have to wager $220 to win $100. If you want to bet the underdog Hawks, you would wager $100 to win $180. Your team would have to win straight up to win your bet.

Types of Bets
A Straight bet is a bet made on a single game or outcome. You can choose to bet the favorite or the underdog or you can bet the over or under of the total score. You can also choose to bet the game on the money line. With a straight bet you are betting on a single event or outcome.

Totals - Over/Under
You can also choose bet the over or the under for the game total score. The over or the under is a wager on the total score at the end of the game. You add the scores of both teams to get the final number. When you bet the under you are betting that the score will be under the total. When you bet the over you are betting the score will be higher than the total. For Example the final score of the game is: Celtics 115 and Lakers 110. The total of the game is 225. You win if you bet over and the score was more than 225 or if you bet under and the score was less than 225. If the score was exactly 225 then it would be a tie also called a push.

Slots rule the casino industry. Twenty years ago the slot machine accounted for 30 percent of the casinos profits. Today it accounts for about 70 percent. Hi-tech computer chips make it possible to offer life-changing jackpots. The new technology also makes it possible to offer slot games that are creative, exciting and entertaining.

There are still many players who enjoy the old style reel machines such as Double and Triple Diamonds and Red, White and Blue, but these machines don’t offer the excitement to the “Video Generation” who grew up spending numerous hours playing video games. Many of these players spent thousands of dollars playing in arcades before they were of legal age to enter a casino, purely for entertainment with no chance of winning any money for their action. Now when they play the new video slots they expect to be entertained as well as having a chance to win back some of their entertainment costs. This has led to a challenge for the slot makers to create games that will entice players to try their games and entertain them enough to keep them playing and coming back to play some more.

Each fall, hundreds of new games are introduced at the World Gaming Expo in Las Vegas. Some of these make it to the casino floor. A few of them will become hits, while others may sit idle and soon find their way to the scrap heap. An idle slot machine takes up valuable real estate on the casino floor and will not be around long because it is unprofitable to keep it. There was a time when the casinos could expect to get a few years of play form each new machine they purchased. Now many of them come and go within nine months to a year. A slot game based on the latest hot TV show or fad may find itself outdated before making it to the floor or soon after if the show or fad loses popularity. This has led to the daunting task for the slot makers to continuously produce new games.

When you are playing your favorite slot machine, have you ever wondered who created the game? Many of us are familiar with the names of the major slot manufacturers; IGT, Bally, WMS, and others who manufacture the physical machines as well as produce the games for them. There are also a few independent game developers who create unique proprietary games which are licensed to the major gaming manufacturers or casinos.

The industry’s leading independent producer of casino games and gaming concepts is company named High 5 Games located in Nanuet, New York. High 5 Games (H5G) has created and patented over 50 casino games and licensed over 20 of these games, almost all of them have been produced or are in the production stage. Founded in 1995 H5G has produced a broad array of slot machine and video poker games. They have created games that are found in machines manufactured by of most leading slot makers including those previously mentioned.

While many players will not recognize the name High 5 Games, many of you will recognize the names of the games they created. Their first game to make it to the casino floor in 1996 was Pick 5 poker for WMS gaming. This was followed by Side Action 21 a video Blackjack game. In 1998 they produced a game that many video poker players still remember, called Big E Poker. The game looked like a big letter “E” and players saw two cards at a time and could pick which line to place each card on to form a paying video poker hand. It was a little complex but those players who mastered the skill of the game loved it.

In 1999 High 5 Games produced their first big hit with a game still very popular with the players called Hot Hot Hot. This was followed by Cash Encounters in 2000, Platypus and The Heist in 2001, produced for Bally Gaming. These four games are so popular that Masque Software included them in their Slots II and Slots by Bally software games for the home player.

Big Top Circus was created for Sigma Gaming by the creative geniuses at High 5 Games. This is a game with personality, whose main character is Max the Monkey, who acts as Ringmaster and interacts with the players throughout the regular game and the bonus rounds. The game also introduces a unique new concept to video slots. H5G owns the patent to the special Connect-A-Pay Technology which offers 99 possible winning combinations per spin. Here is how it works.

With Connect-A-Pay, the player selects between one and nine of the games symbols instead of choosing pay lines. Players can bet up to five coins on all the selected symbols. Since adjacent symbols can appear on any of the lines the matrix offers 99 winning combinations. Each symbol can belong to more than one pay set making it possible to hit the top prize twice in the same spin. Six of the symbols pay out for 3 or more adjacent symbols and three of them only require two adjacent symbols. Because of the pay structure and 99 ways adjacent symbols can be made, the frequency of hits is 46.41 percent when you select nine symbols. This means an average of one hit for every 2.15 spins.
